Create a designer makeover
JAMILA ROBINSON
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
We've all seen it on television: Happy homeowners run off to have a spa day, then return to a newly decorated
home - in about an hour, including commercial breaks.
The TV shows exaggerate, of course. Designer makeover shows require planning, staging and a nice budget
- petty details often left in the editing room. Yet, consumers love this programming, and networks add new
shows each year.
But homeowners don't want to just sit on the sofa and watch TV people have all the fun. Fortunately, the home
design manufacturers are sending products into the market that will allow consumers to transform parts of a
room in a matter of moments.
Bella & Birch
What is it: A decorator wall finish by Procter & Gamble that can make an astounding change to just about any
clean, smooth interior surface. Sonja Willman of Sonja Willman Interiors calls it "unbelievable." We have to
agree. This foolproof product can change bland walls into chocolate brown or deep reds with faux finish in
minutes - without any smell, drop cloths or accidental smudges on ceilings or carpet.
Why we like it: The finish comes in rolls and is dispensed like cellophane tape, and can be applied with and
without the applicator kit. Once the protective film is lifted, the paint adheres to the wall. The four designer
patterns available in 20 colors are computer-enhanced and multidirectional so that they can overlap and make
seams and errors disappear.
"You just want to have some fun with it," says Willman, who designed a library of ragged stripes in the Bella &
Birch show house.
Drawbacks: The "reveal" tape doesn't always peel back the protective film on the first, second or fourth try.
The finish is paint, so if you decide to go back to gallons, you may need a primer.
Cost: 12-inch roll, $69.99; 6-inch roll, $34.99; 2-inch two-pack, $21.99
Where do I get it: Now at www.bellaandbirch.com, The Home Depot and other home improvement stores.
Time it took to cover a 9 x12 wall: 43 minutes
Time it took to stripe a 9 x 12 wall: 4.5 hours
Degree of change: Dramatic
Wall flats
What is it: Say textured walls and ceilings, and people may think of those spray-on popcorn finishes. Wall
Flats, embossed wall tiles by Inhabit, give three-dimensional texture and can make interior walls look like art.
These 18-inch, self-adhesive squares allow you to update the look of a room or ceiling, as well as disguise
flaws in a not-so-smooth wall.
"You can do all kinds of things with the tile, from making a wonderful chair rail, putting them on the ceiling, a
kid's room, or painting them with an accent color," says Kristen Zivic, the owner/partner of LussoHome in
Clayton, Mo. "It's great because anytime you add three dimensions it is really contemporary and will look as if
you have built a new wall."
Why we like it: The self-adhesive paper panels made of eco-friendly bamboo pulp can be rotated or
interlocked. The squares are suitable for all kinds of interiors and can be painted to match decor. The tiles
come in boxes of 10, which is enough to cover about 22 square feet, or about an 8-foot-by-3-foot section of
wall.
Drawback: For walls with any variation, such as concrete, plaster or stucco, a drywall glue may be necessary.
Cost: $84 for a box of 10

Time it takes to install 10 tiles: One hour
Degree of change: Striking
FLOR
What is it: Modular carpet tiles have been used in offices and garages for years. FLOR by InterfaceFLOR
takes the same interlocking floor concept and turns it into casual, modern and luxurious carpeting that can
perk up humdrum, outdated or damaged floors.
Why we like it: FLOR is all about versatility. Each of 31 patterns comes in several colors, and plenty of
weaves in everything from faux mohair, multilevel piles and sisal. With a nonskid bottom and seams that
disappear, these 18-inch-square carpet tiles create countless opportunities to mix, match, customize and add
drama. There are weaves that are functional for garages and outdoor spaces, as well as high-traffic hallways.
FLOR can float over an existing floor, or be installed wall to wall.
"It's so easy, because all you have to do is lay it out, live with it for a couple of days, then pull the adhesive
tabs," says Mike Finan, who created an 8-foot-by-7-foot rug in the dining room of his St. Louis loft.
"It softens the room without a serious commitment," he says.
Drawbacks: FLOR can't go over existing carpet. It needs a hard, flat surface.
Cost: $6.99 to $15.99 a tile, depending on the color, weave and pattern.
Where to get it: www.interfaceflor.com
Time it takes to lay 20 tiles: 15 minutes
Degree of change: Significant
Puzzle Floor
What is it: If you'd like to make a quick change to a kid's room or a recreation area, the Puzzle Floor is child's
play. The 5/8-inch thick, hardwood tiles are precisely cut into puzzle shapes, and can be installed as a floating
wood flooring, or glued to a subfloor in a full installation.
Why we like it: Just connect the puzzle pieces, and a floor begins to emerge in minutes. The result is an
unexpected pattern that can be interspersed with any of the 13 finishes for variation or interesting inlay.
Corner and edge pieces can be adjusted with a saw for wall alignment. Once assembled, the sturdy floor can
be immediately walked up on. The pieces fit so snugly, there is no worry that they will come apart, or be
disassembled by small, idle hands.
Drawbacks: It's a puzzle, so there are moments that the pieces really do become a jigsaw.
Cost: $15 a square foot
Where to get it: www.puzzlefloor.com
Time it took to assemble 4-foot-square floating floor: 10 minutes
Degree of change: Intriguing
